Universities in Sri Lanka play a very important role in national development by providing a space for cultivation of liberal and secular values on the youth of the country. The Ministry of education is very much concerned with the development of the University education in Sri Lanka and therefore formed the University Grant Commission of Sri Lanka to look after the implementation of the national policies on education and proper distribution of funds to various universities of Sri Lanka.

Today the Commission distributes funds to 15 Universities of Sri Lanka, 7 postgraduate institutes and 9 higher educational institutes.
Most of the Universities in Sri Lanka offer opportunities to both local and foreign students to pursue courses of their interests in this beautiful country. For the local students, admission to undergraduate courses in a University in Sri Lanka is done on the basis of rank order on average z scores obtained by the candidates at GCE (A/L) Examination. They need to obtain at least 'S' grades in all three approved subjects and a minimum mark of 30% for the common general paper. Foreign students can get admission to the bachelor degree courses in a university in Sri Lanka if they can demonstrate proficiency in English by scoring at least 550 marks in Test of English as a Foreign Language 6.5 in International English Language Testing system and produce certificates showing impressive results in an examination considered equivalent to the GCE (Advanced) level examination of Sri Lanka.
The course fee for a foreign student in a University in Sri Lanka may vary from $10,000 in most of the medical courses to $3000 in humanities and social science courses. The annual course fee fro Engineering, Design and Architecture, Facilities Management and Transport and Logistics management is close to $ 8000. For various courses like Agriculture, Veterinary Science and Science, Health Promotion, Environmental Conservation and Management, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Industrial Statistics and Mathematical Finance, Computation Management, Marine and Fisheries Biology, Science and technology is $ 6000. Law degree courses in Sri Lanka would cost $5000 annually.
