Often referred as the pearl of Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is known not only for it's natural beauty but also for it's culture and civilization. And education system in Sri Lanka has played a very important role in the preservation of its rich heritage.
The education system in Sri Lanka can be divided into primary, Junior secondary, Secondary, Senior secondary, Pre University and higher education. Primary education in Sri Lanka that starts at the age of 5 lasts for 5 years up to 10 years of age.

The Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary education is for 3 years each. One earns a GCE O level certificate after completing the senior secondary education. This enables the student to enter into the two year Pre University education in Sri Lanka.
Universities, specialized institutions, such as technical colleges and affiliated technical units, and private institutions constitutes the institutes of higher education in Sri Lanka. One needs to spend 3 years for getting a general bachelor degree in Sri Lanka. The duration of the special degree course is of four years and medical courses are of 5 years duration with an additional internship of 1 year. Master degree courses in Sri Lanka consist generally of two years.
One can also pursue non-university level post secondary education in Sri Lanka from various polytechnic institutes, technical institutes affiliated technical units that offer courses in Engineering, Commerce, Business and Crafts. Those who cannot afford to attend regular classes can opt for distance learning courses at the Open University in Sri Lanka.
The primary objective of the ministry of Education in Sri Lanka has been to provide education to all sections of the society in the island nation. It has been successful to a great extent, which is evident from the fact that 92% of population is today literate. The constitution entitles the children of Sri Lanka to get educated either in Sinhala or Tamil at the school level. But the medium of instruction in most of the professional institutes is generally English. However in arts, education and law courses, the medium of instruction can be Sinhala, Tamil, English or all of them.
