Colleges and Universities in Philippines are not just institutes of higher education in the country but also the cradle of economic growth and overall prosperity. Therefore the government has paid tremendous importance to the development of higher education institutes in Philippines. These Colleges and Universities of Philippines can be found both in the public and private sectors. The private sector higher education institutes may be either sectarian or non sectarian.
But all these institutes are required to conform to the rules and regulations of Commission on Higher Education (CHED) of Philippines.
As English is the primary medium of instruction in all the Colleges and Universities in Philippines, students from various parts of the globe come to study in Philippines. Most of these foreign students come from America, Korea and Taiwan. However the number of foreign students coming to Philippines for study is declining in recent times. This is due to the recent ruling of the govt. in 1997 that has prohibited the convertibility of the tourist visa to student visa and not erosion of quality of education in Philippines. Only those Colleges and Universities in Philippines can admit foreign students whose programs are accredited by agencies under the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP) or with equivalent accreditation by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), either as Centers of Excellence (COEs), Centers of Development (CODs) or STCW-compliant Maritime schools and by the Bureau of Immigration (BI). The minimum qualification for getting admission to a college or University in Philippines is to be a high school or secondary school graduate.
