Higher education in China is one of the most developed in whole of Asia and various universities of China comes in the list of top 200 Universities of the world. With more than 2,236 higher education institutes the gross rate of enrollment has reached 19% at the end of 2004. When we talk about higher Education in China, it would mean education pursued after the higher secondary level and higher education institutes in China would include regular universities, University Colleges, adult universities, advanced vocational institutions and other alternative forms of higher education institutes.
While the State Council and the Ministry of Education are responsible for taking policy decisions, development plans, reforms and providing guidance to higher education institutions, the central governments and the provincial governments are responsible for looking after the overall administration of Colleges and universities in China. Managing admission, specialties, fund-raising and providing employment to graduates of colleges and universities is the task of the provincial governments and the Ministry of Education that directly controls 34 regular colleges and universities is responsible for planning, monitoring, evaluating and executing plans and programmes related to higher education in China.
As higher Education in China is playing a very important role in the growth of the economy, the government of China has left no stone unturned for the speedy development of higher education sector in China. Therefore from 2003 it has allowed private educational institutes also to operate in the country. Since then, various foreign universities of high standard are also providing quality higher education in China. At the end of 2004 there were around 1279 institutes of higher education in China.
