Higher Education in Bangladesh would mean education pursued after the higher secondary level. The Ministry of Education of Bangladesh is responsible for planning, monitoring, evaluating and executing plans and programmes related to higher education in Bangladesh that include technical and Madrasah education. After completing the higher secondary education in Bangladesh, one can pursue the graduate level education in general or other professional courses. One needs to spend 4 years to earn a pass or honours bachelor degree from a university in Bangladesh.
While those with an honours degree at the graduate level would have to spend 1 year for earning a masters degree, the holders of (Pass) Bachelor degree, the masters degree course would be of 2 years duration.
There are more than 50 Universities in and around the country to provide opportunities of higher education to the students of Bangladesh.
These universities of Bangladesh can be either in the public sector or in the private sector. Moreover there are quite a good number of Madrasah, technical institutes and general colleges that provide bachelor degrees. However the enrollment in the higher education institutes in Bangladesh is conspicuously low as compare to other developing countries of the world. Reforms in the higher education system of Bangladesh are therefore the need of the hour.
