Travel to Latvia

Introduction

All the major forms of transport, viz. rail, road and air are fairly extensive in Latvia. The country ranks first among the Baltic States in the density and extensiveness of its railway network. However, the domestic railway services in the country are not in a very good taste. Nevertheless, road transport aptly substitutes the rail transport as bus services are extensive and are frequently available in the city and also connect one city with another. Major roads in the country are in good condition and speed limit on motorways/highways is 110 km/h. However, there is a curb on speed limits in towns and open roads. Train services are not that preferred for local transport but trains do connect Latvia with some international destinations. Local train services are quite slow and there is a huge rush.

Public transportation in the country consists of buses, trams and trolley buses. The services are available daily from 5.30am in the morning till 11.30pm at night. Some routes in big cities have night transportation services also. Bus tickets are available on boarding and can be bought from the drivers.

Flights to international destinations depart from the Riga International Airport at regular periods. Major destinations in the country are also well connected by air, with regular to and fro services from capital Riga to major cities. The budget airline phenomenon has also ensured that travel to and from major destinations doesn’t cost much. This has seen the passenger-transport increasing manifold.
