Introduction
The Law on Higher Educational Establishments, 1995, governs institutions of higher education in Latvia. The higher education programmes being imparted in the country can be segregated into university and non-university programmes. Higher education in the country generally falls into either Academic Higher Education, or Professional Higher Education or Doctoral Studies. The universities in the country provide higher education in several fields and provide degrees up to the doctoral degree. Graduates of general secondary, professional secondary and 4-year vocational secondary programme can be admitted to higher educational programmes in the country.

Duration of Bachelor’s programmes is generally between 3 and 4 years depending upon the institution while the master’s degree is awarded after the second stage of academic education, which means a total duration of 5-7 years of study. Bachelor’s and master’s degree is not applicable to the fields of medicine and dentistry. There are other higher educational institutions in the country that have been founded by the state but are not having a university status. These institutions have specialization in one or a number of specific areas. Private institutions in the country usually specialize in professional study programmes.
Mainly, there are four universities and several other higher educational institutions in Latvia. All universities and other higher educational institutions (numbering seventeen) are governed by the state. Recognition of higher educational institutions and programmes in the country is mainly on the basis of quality assessment, which is conducted from time to time. Recognized institutions in the country enjoy autonomy. The institutions of higher education in the country provide both academic and professional degrees. All higher educational institutions in the country use a 10-grade scale, some use it in similar fashion as in secondary education. Normally, grades 8, 9, and 10 denote higher marks while grade 5 or 6 denote pass marks.
Admission Season in Latvia
The academic session in the country begins in September and is over by mid-June or early July next year. The application process starts in second half of June and is on till the first part of August. However, admission timings and requirements are mentioned individually in every higher educational establishment.
