Higher Education in France

Introduction

The French educational system can be classified into primary education, secondary education and tertiary or college education. While primary and secondary education in the country is mostly public, higher education is in the hands of both public and private elements. One of the most striking features of the French higher education is that the higher education institutions in the country are smaller when compared to other countries. Each institution provides programmes in a broad spectrum of disciplines. There is high emphasis on higher education. The government of the country spends almost 20 percent of the annual national budget on education, which means a whopping €6000 on one student! Also, the educational system in the country is renowned for its quality and accessibility.

The higher educational institutions in the country provide degrees, diplomas, and certificates with a global recognition. Of late, the government of the country has initiated several programmes to usher in major reforms in the education system. The aimed reform mainly aims to set the time frame of French education at par with European uiversity standards, which means three year’s for bachelor’s degree, two for master’s degree and three for the doctorate. France leands the European university system in the number of foreign students registered with the higher educational institutes in the country. As per estimates, around 120,000 students are currently pursuing higher education courses in the country.

Since higher education in the country is state funded, tuition costs are extremely low. This is a boost to students who otherwise find it difficult to pursue higher education programmes due to cost factors. Admission and promotion at the institutions in the country is based on merit. This, effectively means that brilliantly qualified students have a good chance of pursuing the programmes of their choice irrespective of their economical or social backgrounds.

Industrial and economic espertise, besides excellent healthcare and a safe political environment are also some of the factors that have made education in the country popular among those willing to go for higher education.

Admission Season in France

The academic season in France runs from mid-September till the end of June next year. Classes begin in the month of October. Applications are normally made two months in advance for the desired courses.
