Higher Education in Estonia

Introduction

Higher education in European Union has been divided into vocational higher education, education with diploma, Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctor’s degree studies. Vocational higher educational institutions provide only vocational higher education. Vocational education can also be pursued at a professional higher school. Higher academic education has three levels, which last from four to ten years – Bachelor’s degree (four years), Master’s degree (two additional years) and Doctor’s degree (four years).

The general standards of higher education have defined the broad contours of higher education in the country. Accordingly, the state has established a system of accreditation. As part of the modernization drive, various international commissions have assessed some curricula. The higher education in the country is twofold and consists of universities and applied higher educational institutions. Post-secondary vocational schools in the country are also offering vocational higher education. The study programmes of the higher educational institutions and their programmes in the country is the responsibility of the Ministry of Higher Education. The private higher educational institutions and their study programmes get official recognition only after accreditation.

Admission Season in Estonia

In Estonia, the academic session begins in September and ends sometimes in June. Admissions to the universities take place generally between mid-June and mid-July. The deadline for submitting applications differs from institution to institution. However, it is usually at the end of June or beginning of July. Some private higher education institutions take admission twice in the same year i.e. these institutions have application deadline set in October or November and in June or July.
